Mela Rossa Cuneo PGI: changes to the product specification

The amendment has been submitted to Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests by the Consortium for the valorisation and protection of the Cuneo Red Apple PGI and mainly concerns the following points:

  1. Calibre variation (diameter and weight) for all varietal groups of apples that fall within the designation “Mela Rossa Cuneo” IGP.
  2. Exclusion from the requirements of the Production Specifications for category, size and weight for apples intended exclusively for processinge: these fruits may still bear the name Mela Rossa Cuneo IGP but may not be destined as such to the final consumer.
  3. Admission of product waxing treatment with natural waxes (coatings) provided for in health regulations among conservation practices.
  4. For product identification intended exclusively for processingThe packaging must bear the wording “Red Apple Cuneo PGI intended for processing”.

Following the investigation, and after receiving a favourable opinion from the Piedmont Region, the Consortium has drafted a proposal to amend the regulations, which will be read out at the public inquiry meeting on 11 July, in agreement with the MASAF and the Piedmont Region: the purpose of the meeting is to allow the Ministry to verify that the proposed regulation complies with Regulation (EU) No 1151/2012.
